Here’s what’s happening in my Midwestern country home…

Wife. Mother. Sports Fan. Golfer. Runner. Fitness Fanatic. Foodie!

My name is Debbie Albrecht, and I’m a Midwestern mom with a passion for fitness, food, all things sports, and fabulous fashion.  Join me on my journey towards becoming the best baker and cook possible, all while raising my 2 1/2 year old son, T.J., with my husband, Mike.  My kitchen in my Northern Iowa country home is where I experiment and my two boys are my taste testers 🙂

Along with being a Foodie, I am an avid runner and fitness obsessed woman.  I’ll share some workouts and tips that have worked for me and allow me to enjoy all the flavors of the foods and beverages I love while still being able to stay healthy and fit.  Moderation is the key…both in food and exercise.

I’ll also share some of my favorite things, including fashion and products that I enjoy using in my day to day life.  I hope you can take a little away from my journey to use in your own life and that I get a chance to learn from many of you along the way.  Now lets get to cooking!

As mentioned above, one of my many passions includes fitness.  Along with running, I like to keep in shape by strength training and doing BeachBody workout videos at home.  I am also a strong believer in the power of Shakeology and how it fuels and feeds my body for health and fitness.  Because of my passion for these products, I became a BeachBody Coach in hopes of inspiring and motivating others to be the healthiest versions of themselves.  If interested in learning more about these products, click on the BeachBody Products menu tab above, email me, check out my Get Fit with Debbie Facebook page, or visit my BeachBody website at:

  1. Hi, Debbie, and thanks for the Follow — it’s great meeting another Debbie and another Midwesterner online. Looking forward to poking around your blog here!

  2. Hi it’s cool so to find another Midwesterner I was born and raised in Charles City,Iowa. Relocated to Illinois in 1972. I am 61 and miss Iowa a lot. My mom is still in CC in the Cedar Health Nursing home. Reading your stuff on Facebook is like being back in Iowa. You can take the girl out of Iowa but you can’t take Iowa out of the girl.

    • I am also a “RaeLynn” from Iowa, Spirit Lake……..just stubbled across this site, and will do some investigating………love reading new recipes. The maid-rites look great, but I guess I grew up calling them “sloppy joes”……..

      • Hi RaeLynn! Thank you so much for reading! I hope you find some recipes that you enjoy! We grew up eating sloppy joes, as well, but those are a little different than “Maid-Rites” because they have a tomato base in them. Now that you’re talking about them, you have me craving them 🙂 That may be on my table soon!

  3. Hi Debbie….
Happy to see your sight, and just need to add that when I was a single Mom, my girls and I ate a lot of “hamburger dishes”. One day we decided..we would find another name for “sloppy joes”. My girls decided we would call them….”Untidy Samuel’s !” I think they decided that because sometimes a “sloppy joe” is not the easiest, tidiest thing to eat. When their friends would come to join us for a meal they were intrigued with such a new dish!! I added a can of Campbell’s alphabet vegetable soup to the hamburger…so I knew they were getting their veggies too! Like your Debbie’s Midwestern Kitchen sight! Thanks for sharing your life and recipes too.

    • Dorothy – Thank you for sharing that story! I LOVE the name “Untidy Samuels” 🙂 Next time I make Sloppy Joes I’m going to tell my boys that’s what I’m serving and see how they react. I hope you continue to enjoy my posts and stories. Its so fun to share them and come into contact with new people like you and hear your stories. Hope to hear from you again soon!

  4. Thank you for the Maid Rite recipe. I am from Iowa but now live in Southeastern Virginia.
I have been looking for this recipe.

  5. Hi Debbie, Another Midwestern Debbie here. Currently live in MN, but grew up in Iowa. Ottumwa for the most part, so I am very familiar with loose meat sandwiches. There is a little place in Ottumwa that had them. They were called “canteens” which is also the name of the little alley restaurant. It has been there since my Mom was in high school, She would have been 84 this year. Anyway, thanks for the recipe and the memories! Debbie

  6. Wondering if I know you of if I knew your parents…I grew up in Belmond, and taught in Clear Lake, Mason City, and Rockwell-Swaledale…and knew some Albrechts then. Enjoy your website!

    • Marty,

I’m so happy you are enjoying my website 🙂 Albrecht is my married name and Mike’s family is all from around Humboldt. I do know there are some Albrechts around here that pronounce their name the same as us, but we’re not any relation. Hope you find some recipes you enjoy 🙂

  7. there is an easier way that copycats the Maid Rite recipe. Use high quality ground beef, cook in frypan using beef broth, crumble as you cook, using tellicherry ground pepper, salt, small small amount of onion flakes, a tbls. of Worchester sauce. Use low heat to cook simmering in the broth. drain and eat . YOU WILL LOVE IT !

  8. Sounds intersting….I am from Joice, Ia a town of about 250 people.
Have alrways lived around this area….Interested in getting fit and eating healthy. Do you share some of your recipes?
I also sell Wellmark Insurance here in Iowa…

    Diane Anderson

    • Hi Diane! Yes, I do share my recipes. You can find them on this website. I also share them on my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest pages. I not as active this year due to going back to teaching, raising a 3 year old, and taking a graduate course. Let me know if you have any questions about anything! I know right where Joice is located…not too far from me 🙂
